Football, also known as soccer in some countries, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a spherical ball into the opposing team’s net, using any part of the body except the hands and arms, except for the goalkeepers, who can use their hands within a designated area. The sport is governed by a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game, maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
Football is played on a rectangular field called a pitch, usually grass or artificial turf, with a goal at each end. The game is divided into two halves, typically lasting 45 minutes each, with a 15-minute halftime break. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins. If both teams score the same number of goals, the match is considered a draw unless it is part of a knockout competition.
Football is one of the most popular sports globally, with a massive following at both professional and amateur levels, culminating in major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and continental championships like the UEFA European Championship. It fosters teamwork, strategy, and physical fitness among its players.
